Access Summer School Praised
The Universities UK update report on widening access to higher education has praised the Wider Access Study Centre.
Centre director John Blicharski and former access summer school student Amanda Whitehead travelled to the Commons last month to meet politicians at the report's launch.
Following an initial review of the centre in 1998, the update stated, "progress in this remarkable initiative has been sustained and extended. Its irreproachably thorough monitoring and tracking systems provide a record of which any university would be proud."
John Blicharski said, "Several institutions cited the University of Dundee's model of widening access as being central to their own award winning strategies, not least the University of Wales, which modelled its own summer university on our access summer school following the first "from elitism to inclusion' report."
"I was also delighted to be able to take Amanda with me to the event. Her unique perspective was valued by assorted Lords, MPs and other invited guests."
