Mathematician sums up

Senior mathematics lecturer Dr Charlie Dixon has retired after nearly 47 years with the University. One of the longest serving members of staff, Charlie came to University College, Dundee as a fresher in 1953. After graduating with first class honours in 1957 he was appointed assistant lecturer in the department of mathematics where he has continued ever since with only short breaks as a research assistant at Imperial College, London, and visits to Australia and the USA.

A popular figure with both staff and students Charlie was a founding member of the University's schools liaison office and the first dean of students for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He was also a founding member of the Scottish Mathematical Council's Mathematical Challenge and Scottish Chairman (and UK Vice-president) of the Royal Meteorological Society.

A keen bagpipe player, Charlie came to be regarded as the University's 'unofficial' piper and he was in great demand for Burns Suppers and to lend a Scottish flavour to events such as graduation garden parties and conference dinners. Summing up his long association with the University, Charlie said: "It's been great. I've enjoyed every minute of it."
