Lorraine Kelly to host TICR Carnaval de Cuba Ball
Lorraine Kelly to host TICR Carnaval de Cuba Ball, Apex City Quay Hotel, 9th October 2004
A limited number of tickets are still available for the Carnaval de Cuba ball, a unique fundraising event
to be hosted by GMTV star and University of Dundee Rector Lorraine Kelly. The black-tie ball will take
place on Saturday 9th October at the Apex City Quay Hotel in aid of the University of Dundee's £3.5m
appeal to establish the Institute for Cardiovascular Research (TICR). The TICR campaign has already
raised £2.5m and is now entering into its final phase to raise the remaining £1m to complete the centre.
TICR is an interdisciplinary group developing a strategic approach towards developing more effective
treatments for heart disease, working with a range of specialists in public health, laboratory science,
nutrition and cardiovascular research. Heart disease is Scotland’s number 1 killer and the urgent need to
address this terrible disease was demonstrated just this week with the findings by scientists at TICR
that 1 in 5 children who took part in a recent screening programme in Tayside were displaying early signs
of heart disease.
The ball will begin with a Cuban themed cocktail reception, followed by a three-course dinner with wine;
Cuban dance and music is provided by 'Rhumba Table' and Space Dance Studio. Local band, 'Ringer' will
also entertain the crowds and a charity casino and further entertainment will also be on site.
Sponsorship has been received from the Apex City Quay Hotel, Maximum, Winter's Printers, Becs Hair Salon
and Tennants Caledonian Brewery.
With Lorraine acting as compère, the charity gala auction is expected to be one of the highlights of the
night. Up for grabs in the auction are a range of star lots, including a week in a luxury villa in
Portugal, exclusively designed jewellery by Sandra Wilson (recently commissioned by the University to
design a brooch for HRH The Princess Royal), a privately catered dinner party provided by Trigger Events,
flying lessons from Tayside Aviation and a fabulous trip to London with a private tour of the GMTV
studios.
Raffle prizes on the night include a range of luxury hotel accommodation, beauty treatments worth more
than £300, membership of a health club, limited edition art works and camping equipment.
Already the ball has attracted interest from across the Scottish business, medical, pharmaceutical and
corporate community. Anyone wishing to buy tickets to the ball, find out about further sponsorship
opportunities or donating an auction prize should contact the Events Department on 01382 345564 or email
