discparc's second release

Photo opportunity: 5.30pm, Friday 8 October, Cooper Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, Perth Road, Dundee

The up and coming crème de la crème of Scotland's club scene will gather when 'discparc', the University of Dundee's music and audio art record label launches its second release 'DP002'.

discparc aims to emulate the success of their first release, which was received with critical acclaim across the music industry. Four artists, all Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design graduates, feature on the 12" vinyl.

It introduces Graeme Martin and Steve Murray, the two halves that together make up 'Electric Lady', fast becoming one of Scotland's finest soulful house and broken beat nights at Dundee's 'Reading Rooms' nightclub. Mark Wallace features after a great response from his single 'c-digga', on discparc's first release. Florian Grassl recent graduate of University of Dundee completes the line up with music that has been described as "mind-bending ambient psychedelia."

The label launched a year ago to distribute original recordings by dedicated music and audio artists at any stage of their career. DP001, disparc's first release was played in clubs across Europe and North America as well as receiving national and international radio coverage, featuring on Radio 1's playlist amongst others.

discparc promotes a broad spectrum of sounds from electro-acoustic to experimental music and can distribute on all audio forms including vinyl, CD, cassette and on-line. With a blue-label for music and a black-label for sound art, all prospective artists are catered for. Ultimately, it is a resource and support for emerging to established audio artists. The label is engaged in an ongoing search to find artists who present unique and challenging work.

Jenny Brownrigg, Curator at University of Dundee's Exhibitions Department says, "We believe the University of Dundee is the first UK University to have its own audio label and are proud to have identified a gap in the market and responded to a strong local music and audio art scene by creating the label discparc. It will be interesting to see the label develop over the next few years and monitor how 'discparc' is received by the wider public, perhaps looking for something alternative. The early signs are promising - DP002 is already being played at club nights in Vienna!"

The launch on Friday 8 October is the centrepiece of a ten-day 'discparc' festival with the four artists performing on the night in half hour slots. The festival will also stage graduate exhibitions, a talk by Ronnie Gurr - the man behind Boy George's Culture Club as well as a video remake of Blondie's 1980 hit 'Atomic'.
