Photo opportunity 19:05 Monday 1 September, Tay Rail Bridge, Riverside Drive, Dundee.
Professor Dario Alessi from the University of Dundee will take to the cold waters of the Tay tonight to raise money for the new Diabetes Research Centre being built at the University.
Dario, who swam from Tayport to Broughty Ferry last year for Diabetes UK will swim bridge to bridge tonight with the Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association while Professor Sir Philip Cohen, Director of Research at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre, will bring his collecting bucket to the swim's prize-giving at the Olympia Leisure Centre at 8pm.
Appropriately, swimmer and collector will pass Tesco Riverside where the University Diabetes team have been fundraising during the month of August and held their last collection this afternoon. Tesco were kind enough to allow the University campaign to collect in its local stores during August and have also pledged to donate a further 20% of the amount raised.
Dario will be one of the key researchers in the new centre which is due to open in Spring 2005. The fundraising campaign to raise the remaining £4 million for the project was launched earlier this year by Hollywoodactor, Dundonian and diabetes sufferer Brian Cox.
