The annual prize from the Dundee Association of Women Graduates (DAWG) for the most outstanding female on the University of Dundee access course will be presented today (Thursday September 18) to Kathy Vickers.
Kathy will receive £50 of book tokens from Mrs Irene McIntosh, President of DAWG, at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church, Marketgait, Dundee.
Kathy, the mother of two teenage daughters, was widowed in 1998 and enrolled on the access course last year, attending classes one day a week. The access course is designed to offer a chance for those without the necessary qualifications to enter higher education.
The annual DAWG's Student Award aims to reward female access course students who have overcome obstacles to study, and to recognise those who have made exceptional effort and contribution throughout the part-time one year course.
She gained merits in her four chosen modules English, Philosophy, Politics and History and was instrumental in forming a student group which met to discuss course work.
Kathy said, "The access course gave me the opportunity to enter higher education. In my circumstances, there was no other way in which I could eventually start a full-time undergraduate course. This award therefore, is really special to me."
Kathy is now a first year undergraduate student studying English, Philosophy and History.
Irene McIntosh said: "It is a pleasure to present this award and I wish Kathy every success in her studies. I look forward to hearing about her progress in the future."
The DAWG exists to foster friendship among women throughout the world, encourage research and stimulate the interests of university women.
