A commendable verdict

Staff at the University of Dundee Law Department are celebrating after the Quality Assurance Agency gave them a resounding vote of confidence securing their position as one of the best law departments in Scotland and a consistent educator of able and adaptable lawyers.

Reviewing the law degrees and also the programmes offered by the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy the jury from the QAA concluded that the quality of learning and teaching, student progression and learning resources all fell into their top category - commendable.

Head of the Law Department Fiona Raitt welcomed the result saying: "We are delighted at this result as it confirms what the Research Assessment Exercise concluded with our 5 rating for research- making us one of the best law departments in Scotland."

Particular praise was given to student progression and the department was congratulated on its provision for advising students and ensuring their individual academic success through personal one to one tutoring.

The report drew attention to CEMPLP's innovative range of teaching methods and to the practical experience of its full time and external teaching staff. The Head of CEMPLP, Dr Philip Andrews-Speed, said: "This rating shows that CEMPLP's international reputation for postgraduate education is based on an academically rigorous programme."

The Law department at the University of Dundee is the only law department in Scotland to offer degrees in English law. As well as this there is flexibility in course choice. The University saw its first students graduate with combined degrees in law and accountancy and law and languages this summer.

The Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy prepares students for managerial, advisory and academic positions in the private sector and government in the international energy and natural resources sector.

This is the sixth top result from the QAA for the University of Dundee this year. The departments of English, History, Geography, Economics and the Division of Applied Computing have all been reviewed by the QAA and found to be in their top category of learning in higher education. The Division of Applied Computing was also awarded a special exemplary commendation for its outstanding student care.
