Are you scared to use your WAP service on your mobile phone? Is it slow, difficult and a waste of time? A student at the University of Dundee is taking steps to speed up the WAP service and has designed a local information service to demonstrate what WAP can do quickly and efficiently.
Usability is the main problem with the WAP internet service. Due to small screens, limited memory and slow connections to the internet, WAP leaves users feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. Connecting to the web on a mobile phone is slower than the high fast flow of data through a PC but with the recent production of microbrowsers the potential for high quality WAP based systems has increased.
Andrew Tollin has designed a system that combats these problems. The new menu driven system allows users to easily and quickly locate the information they require. The information is formatted and displayed so the user can distinguish between links, information and help sections.
The new system contains information on local services, what's on in Dundee and at the University. It contains access to a whole range of local data such as the location of the nearest post office, leisure centre or taxi company. The mobile phone company Orange has expressed an interest in Andrew's project.
The new WAP system will be on diplay as part of the applied computing department's MSc project show on Tuesday 25 September./ENDS
