A foretaste of courses on offer at the University of Dundee, including new lines in product design and sports biomedicine will be on offer to next year's students at an open day tomorrow just before this year's batch of freshers start next week. Over 1800 first years will start the new term studying 226 different subjects and 21 new courses.
The product design degree is a new initiative to train the Dyson designers of the future. A collaborative project between the School of Design and the Department of Civil Engineering, the degree will teach the skills of design and the practical issues, constraints and opportunities associated with the commercial market.
Tom Inns, Head of the School of Design at the University of Dundee sees his future graduates as indispensable employees in the world of design. "Products are about customer aspirations and ergonomics as well as technical efficiency. Businesses require broad technical, creative and marketing skills in their product designers to ensure a market lead for their companies. Our graduates will have a full complement of skills including design, engineering and marketing to achieve "total product design" - designing the "must have" gadgets of the future."
The new Sports Biomedicine degree will combine a thorough understanding of the physiology of sport with management issues of the leisure industry equipping graduates with the skills to design exercise, dietary and coaching programmes, recognise and deal with sports injuries and administer psychological assessments. The course will start in 2002 and UCAS applications are being accepted now.
Other new courses at the University of Dundee include degrees in nursing and midwifery, interactive media design and a number of new programmes in international relations complementing history, politics and American studies in joint degrees.
The University will open its doors tomorrow to anyone interested in studying at the University of Dundee. Visitors will be able to tour departments, watch demonstrations and speak to staff and students as well as finding out about finance and accommodation. The open day runs from 10am until 3.30pm.
