An eminent American scientist has had to call off a visit to the University of Dundee on Monday because of the military build up in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks.
Dr Darrell Hopper, a member of military personnel and a scientific researcher at the Wright Patterson Air Force base was due to deliver a lecture - "Beyond the Holodeck" - looking at display technology over the next 50-500 years. Dr Hopper was so disappointed when he learned that he would not be able to travel to Dundee that he has sent his lecture notes on to the University so it can be delivered in his absence.
The lecture will kick off the University's new MSc in display technology, systems and applications - a unique collaborative training programme involving six universities and many industrial partners.
Chris Williams of Logystyx, one of the course's industrial partners will deliver Dr Hopper's lecture on Monday 24 September in the Tower Extension lecture theatre at 6.30pm.
Students, matriculated for the course at the University of Dundee will take modules at the Universities of Dundee, Abertay, Edinburgh, Nottingham Trent, Oxford and Cambridge and will secure industrial placements for themselves for the rest of the year. The scheme is receiving funding of almost £1 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Dr Hopper manages the Aerospace Displays programme at the Air Force research laboratory and has led display technology programmes for the US Department of Defense since 1988. He has over 220 publications to his name including papers on organic chemistry, quantum chemistry and molecular physics.ENDS
