Scientists from all over the UK will gather at the University of Dundee this week to discuss and watch demonstrations of the latest advances in microscopes.
An advanced day session for twenty research students will take place today before the conference opens on Wednesday on quantitative analysis in scanning probe and electron microscopies. Lectures will be given by leading experts in the field and demonstrations will be given scientists in the department of electronic engineering and physics at the University of Dundee.
Over 150 delegates are expected to attend the conference which includes sessions on electron microscopy, new instrumentation, imaging and analysis, advanced microanalysis and probe microscopy.
A workshop on SuperSTEM - an advanced computer controlled electron microscope for sub-Angstrom imaging with ultra-high resolution - will be attended by over fifty scientists. The cost of the project totals £4.2 million and is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
A trade exhibition of electron optical instruments and analytical systems will be held in a marquee outside the conference centre. In addition to the mainstream manufacturers of electron microscopes there will be a broad spectrum of companies which produce ancillary equipment for specimen preparation and data analysis.
The University of Dundee is home to the most powerful electron microscope in the world which allows observation of particles 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
The conference will be held in the West Park Conference Centre at the University of Dundee from Wednesday 5 until Friday 7 September.ENDS
