Winner of over 160 professional golf tournaments world-wide including a rare grand slam of majors, Gary Player, who himself is an honorary graduate of the University of Dundee, has voiced his support and admiration for a fitness programme for the over 60s developed at the University.
Player’s comments come as the Over 60s exercise clubs reach their own landmark - the opening of the 60th club. There are now classes throughout the United Kingdom from as far north as Aberdeen to Taunton in the south.
Commenting on the fitness programme developed by Miss Dorothy Dobson, MBE, he states that: 'As someone who knows the benefit of regular exercise I am very pleased to commend the Dorothy Dobson Over 60s Exercise Method. It is a marvellous way of staying fit and mobile- Just what the doctor ordered!'
Miss Dobson commented that: 'It is a marvellous thought that today, up and down the country over 60s are coming together under the guidance of our highly trained leaders to enjoy exercise to music. The support of the University of Dundee has been crucial in allowing our work to expand so far. Our work is an example of town and gown at its best. Communities with our over 60s exercise classes feel a unique bond of loyalty to, and affection for, the University of Dundee.'
At a time when interest is growing in promoting health in later life, the over 60s exercise classes offer a sociable, friendly and enjoyable way of keeping fit.
Professor Marion McMurdo, Head of Ageing and Health at the University of Dundee and a leading researcher on exercise in later life added: 'Gary player is a wonderful role model for us all, and his support for the over 60s is most welcome. He is known for his extraordinary sporting success in golf spanning several decades, his physical and mental fitness, his tenacity and his irrepressible enthusiasm for life. I am sure that his remarks will be a great boost to all those attending the University of Dundee over 60s exercise classes throughout the country.'
