Public lecture programme on Scottish art
The University of Dundee's Centre for the Study of Modern & Contemporary Scottish Art will launch its first public lecture programme on the history of Scottish Art, 'Scottish Art from the 'Kailyard' to the Contemporary', later this week.
Dr. Laura Newton from the University of Northumbria will open the series on Thursday with a talk on the work of a renowned group of young artists known as the 'Glasgow Boys' who flourished in the late 1800's by challenging the classical and allegorical subject matter of the art establishment in Scotland. Laura will also examine images of Scottishness in Victorian Britain.
The Centre for the Study of Modern & Contemporary Scottish launched in 2004 taking advantage of the specialist researchers in Scottish art based at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design to create a centre of research and teaching excellence.
The lecture programme runs for the academic year providing a platform for contemporary researchers in Scottish Art from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Dr. Laura Newton's lecture starts at 4.00pm, Thursday 20 October, Lecture Room 5017, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Perth Road, Dundee. The lecture is free and open to the public.
