Lower Foyer Gallery,
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design
Exploring aspects of female identity, three female Fine Art Students and 1 male Time-Based art student from DJCAD will show the results of an intensive 10-day creative workshop in an exhibition, called 'The F Slot', opening on Fri 14 October, 5-7pm and running until Thursday 20 October at DJCAD.
The theme of how the female is represented in art and our culture has been tackled by each of the artists in unique ways through their chosen medium and style.
Katherine Stewart's delicate watercolours of flowers and plants could echo the by-gone age of the Victorian botanical illustrator. However, Stewart adds a modern twist by arranging fragments of text next to these illustrations, thus giving them new meaning.
Laura Sneddon's work takes the explicit representation of women in pornographic magazines as her starting point. However, she seeks to see how she can alter their original meaning. By adding delicate, intuitive, hand-drawn patterns to the harsh collaged images, the women and their bodies become a vessel for something else.
Michelle Souter uses fabric, pattern and sewing in her work to conceal and reveal elements of a personal narrative. The artist sews secrets into the fabric, allowing the viewer glimpses of a hidden story.
Douglas Flockhart works in video and photography to reflect a group of young women discussing how beauty is constructed in our society and media. The film on show in this exhibition will create a tension through the women's theoretical discussion juxtaposed against their own posing to camera.
Emerging Edinburgh artist Kirsty Whiten has led the group in their enquiry of their subject matter. The workshop was set up to allow the students to develop their work intensively in a gallery situation, led by a contemporary artist working with the same themes.
