Sought after designers show work to industry
Photo/media opportunity 6pm, Monday 25 October, level 8, Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone
College of Art and Design Perth Road, Dundee.
Third year students who are already securing internships and commercial contracts for their interactive
media design are exhibiting their work in a showcase exhibition next week at the University of Dundee.
Students studying on the new interdisciplinary Interactive Media Design course -
bridging teaching in applied computing and design to equip students for a career in digital imaging -
will be exhibiting their latest works to an audience of industry and fellow students.
Three students on the highly successful Interactive Media Design course at the University's faculties of
engineering and art and design, have already spent a summer as design interns - an early and strong
indicator of their creativity and employment prospects in the industry when they graduate.
Paul Gault (20) will be showing his thought provoking animation on the Iraq war in an animation showing
bombs travelling from Washington to be dropped on Iraq. "The idea behind my animation is to show the
violence spreading over the globe" explains Paul. Paul made a video for NCR over the summer on the
difficulties that blind people have using cash machines. NCR intend using the video during customer
presentations to raise awareness of the issues and to act as a catalyst to inspire innovative solutions.
Michael McNamara, Director of Advanced Solution Concepts at NCR said: "The multidisciplinary nature of
the Interactive Media Design course made it the right choice for a student placement project of this
nature as it involved understanding the issues and then creatively communicating these to the viewer in
an innovative and engaging manner".
Andrew Cook (20) from Newcastle will be exhibiting a website that he designed for Anna Meredith, resident
composer with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Andrew has secured a further contract with another
composer to design a bespoke site for the composer.
Christine McGill, who won the Northern Ireland final of the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP)
whilst on work placement with digital media agency, Dimex is exhibiting a website profiling her favourite
designer Oliviero Toscani. She and her host company Dimex beat off 25 other students to win a project to
build a portable and upgradable interactive showcase of fully functioning case studies for the company
sales team.
Crawford Coutts (20) from Dundee has just set up his own publishing company with friends and is planning
to publish and sell Daemon - a new spiritual and psychological thriller comic - next year. Crawford will
be showing his installation piece "The chaos project" - a room with sensor pads on the floor which
activate images on the wall.
University Principal Sir Alan Langlands will be present the level one class prize to Rosie Barthram and
the level two prize to Christine Magill.
The exhibition opens on Monday 25 October and runs for a week.
