The University of Dundee golf team will be going head-to-head with the Royal and Ancient (R & A) Golf Club of St Andrews tomorrow (Wednesday 15 October) at 1.30 pm.
The annual match at the Old Course, St Andrews, puts the R & A team (usually former Walker Cup team players) up against 12 undergraduates from the University.
Eight of these students are on the R & A bursary award scheme (details below) which provides teaching and financial support to help golfers who demonstrate particular potential.
Since starting in 1990 the bursary scheme has funded 92 undergraduates to train in golf whilst studying at the University of Dundee.
Kirsteen Cruickshanks of the University of Dundee’s Institute of Sport & Exercise, said, "The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews have pioneered the development of golf through the financial assistance provided to universities for golf bursary opportunities.
Under this partnership the University of Dundee has established one of the most comprehensive and structured bursary programmes in higher education. Some of our former bursars have achieved national representation or turning professional.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews should be commended for their vision and commitment to developing golf at the highest level."
Each team will consist of 12 players and the format of the competition will be four-ball better ball, match-play. Last year's event was a draw, the two previous matches were wins for the University team.
