Generating pedal power

Photo opportunity 10am, Thursday 24 October, Tower foyer, Tower Building, University of Dundee

Staff and students at the University of Dundee will find out tomorrow just how much energy it takes to keep the University ticking over when they climb on the energy bike and pedal to power their PCs.

The bike will be available for those who are brave enough at the University's energy awareness day tomorrow in the University Tower foyer. As well as pedalling to generate power, staff will be able to hook up everyday office and laboratory equipment to energy meters to discover just how many kilowatts they are using and how much can be saved with more careful use.

Energy manager Derek Mitchell says: "I estimate that if staff remember to switch off their monitors when they leave their desks for an hour, energy consumption will dip and save not only cash but contribute to conserving our environment."

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness in University staff and students of the environmental and economic benefits of minimising energy wastage through simple saving measures.

Staff will be asked to switch off all non-essential electrical equipment tomorrow. The graph of electrical consumption will be monitored throughout the day and it is hoped to record a lunchtime dip.

The University is currently supplied by a 3MW Combined Heat and Power Plant which makes it one of the greenest sites in the UK.
