Work will start tomorrow on The Institute for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Dundee - the first institute of its kind in Scotland bringing together experts from different fields to tackle heart disease.
£1 million has now been raised to start phase 1 of the new institute - clinical research rooms which will allow interaction between research staff and patients. The new facilities will be completed and ready for use in February 2003.
TICR will bring together on one site, skilful clinicians and researchers from all areas of the University of Dundee's Medical School who have a special interest in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
Young fundraisers from Longforgan will visit Ninewells to see the builders begin the refurbishment. The children from Longforgan Primary School raised £358 for the institute by taking part in a sponsored keep fit. The whole school participated and raised additional funds by selling apples and cake and candy.
Dr Stuart Fair, of the Leng Trust which donated 100,000 to the project will attend the start of the refurbishment tomorrow with Annie Anderson, Professor of Food Choice, Professor Jill Belch, from the Department of Medicine and Robert McLaren, chairman of the TICR fundraising committee.
TICR is aiming to raise another 2.3 million to reach the 3.5 million target. The next fundraising event will be a comedy play evening by Act IV at Gardyne Theatre on Friday 1 November. All proceeds to TICR. Tickets are available from Heather Dobson in the Appeals and Campaigns office at the University of Dundee 01382 344821.
