Mary Scanlon, MSP, will welcome a bumper batch of first year politics students to the University of Dundee tomorrow, October 4.
A meteoric 80% rise in applications to the Politics courses for 2002 has seen the department's intake go up by 60% this year. Mrs Scanlon, herself a former Politics student at the University of Dundee, will attend an "icebreaker" session tomorrow, sharing her experiences of University and her political career.
She said, "I am encouraged to hear that there has been such a dramatic increase in application to study Politics. Dundee is a fine place to study the subject, and I personally owe a great deal much to the department since they helped me raise my confidence and horizons and gave me the opportunity to get to where I am today."
The 80% increase in applications to study Politics at Dundee well exceeds the national rise in applications to the subject, which increased by around 15% this year.
Dr Norrie MacQueen, head of the Politics department said, "Recent global events have aroused general interest in the study of Politics and Dundee now offers a new course in International Relations which has made a significant difference this year. However, it is fair to say that the Politics department's profile has increased dramatically over the last few years, in part because of the top-name lunchtime lecture series high profile research conferences on Scotland, Russia and the USA."
