Advanced higher maths pupils from the Dundee City Council schools in Dundee will visit the University of Dundee tomorrow to hear expert lectures on mathematics and participate in problem solving workshops.
Dr Fordyce Davidson will deliver a lecture on "Maxima and Minima" - discovering what are the biggest and smallest values that variable quantities can have. The pupils will learn to calculate this using a calculus procedure in the following workshops run by students and staff from the department of mathematics.
The event is supported by the Academic Partnership between the University of Dundee and Dundee and Angus Councils. The partnership aims to foster closer relations between the study of science and engineering in schools and Universities allowing school teachers direct access to higher education expertise and giving Universities a thorough understanding of the teaching in schools.
There will be five additional afternoons between November and March at the University of Dundee when the pupils will attend lectures and workshops covering topics from the Advanced Higher Grade syllabus./ENDS
