Sir Alan Langlands, Principal of the University of Dundee will receive an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow today as part of the University's year long celebrations marking its eleventh jubilee.
Dundee's Principal, formerly Chief Executive of the NHS in England is a graduate of Glasgow University and will receive his degree for his immense contribution to public life in the fields of health and education.
Sir Alan will join luminaries such as Richard Armstrong, music director of Scottish opera, Magnus Linklater, journalist and senior politicians Sam Galbraith and Menzies Campbell in receiving Glasgow's celebratory awards at a ceremony in Glasgow University's magnificent Bute Hall at 11am today.
Glasgow-born Sir Alan was the Secretary of State for Health's principal policy adviser for the NHS, responsible to Parliament for the stewardship of funds totalling £40 billion. He is a science graduate of the University of Glasgow, an Honorary Professor at the University of Warwick Business School and a member of the Board of the Business School. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He is a member of the governing Council and the Court of the University of York.
He received a Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 1998 for services to the NHS.
