Lister Research Prize Lecture

A leading biomedical scientist from the University of Dundee will present the Lister Research Prize Lecture on Monday November 21st.

Dr Tomoyuki (Tomo) Tanaka, a Principal Investigator in the School of Life Sciences, was one of only three recipients in the UK to receive the prestigious Lister Research Prize this year. He will present the Lister Research Prize Lecture to an audience of invited guests and colleagues, including Dame Bridget Ogilvie, Chairman of the Lister Institute and Dr Trevor Hince, the Institute's Director. Following the lecture Dame Bridget will make a presentation to Dr Tanaka.

The Lister Research Prize is awarded to help young scientists pursue their personal research interests in biomedical sciences. The Prize award consists of £150,000, which can be used to enhance the awardee's research in any way they wish.

In his research, Tomo investigates how cells regulate themselves during proliferation. Dr Tanaka and his team recently discovered how cells get all their chromosomes inherited during cell division to prevent cancers and other diseases.

Tomo joined the School of Life Sciences to start his own research group only 4 years ago. Prior to that he worked for 5 years at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna. Tomo received a medical degree in 1987 from the University of Tokyo and then carried out residences in Tokyo and Jishi Medical Schools before moving to Europe.

The Lecture, entitled "Mechanisms of chromosome segregation to daughter cells" will be held on Monday, 21 November at 4 pm in the MSI Small Lecture Theatre.

Notes to Editor:

The Lister Institute was founded in 1891 and has made distinguished contributions to biomedical science for over a century. The charitable objectives of the Institute are to further understanding and progress in preventive medicine by promoting biomedical excellence in the UK through its support of the biological and biomedical sciences and to ensure long-term public benefit through publication of the knowledge gained and, where appropriate, by encouraging its exploitation.
