Dundee Lord Provost John Letford may have had a triple heart bypass earlier this year, but that didn't stop him striding out in a sponsored trek to raise funds for the University of Dundee's TICR campaign.
Mr Letford underwent surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary earlier this year after being diagnosed with narrowing of the arteries. Just months later, he undertook the nine-mile walk in Pitlochry to help his heart and boost the University's drive to tackle heart disease.
Tomorrow (Tuesday 18 November) at the City Chambers he will present a cheque for £250 to Professor Allan Struthers, Head of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Dundee. The TICR campaign will fund a new Institute for Cardiovascular Research, based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, bringing together clinicians and researchers with expertise in cardiovascular disease to create a centre of excellence tackling Scotland's number one killer.
The most successful fundraiser at the event in August was Elspeth Yule of Dundee. She raised over £800 and will be presented tomorrow with a luxury weekend stay for two at the Atholl Palace Hotel to reward her efforts.
Robert McLaren said, "This is a fantastic boost for this very worthwhile cause. Both Mrs Yule and Mr Letford have set a great example working hard to contribute to the battle against heart disease while keeping fit themselves."
