New Scotland: New Politics

Photo opportunity, 12.50pm, Friday November 29, First Floor Conference Suite, Tower Building, University of Dundee

Three and a half years after the Scottish Parliament was established, its Presiding Officer, Sir David Steel, will address staff and students at the University of Dundee to outline the benefits it has brought to politics in Scotland and the various ways in which the Parliament has become a model for Westminster.

Speaking tomorrow, November 29, in the final lunchtime Politics lecture of this term, Sir David will focus on the many successes of devolution and will say, "These successes have created a solid foundation, repatriated politics to Scotland, and energised public life". Sir David will go on to challenge Universities and every other part of Scottish society to embrace the opportunities the Scottish Parliament presents, and not be distracted by what he regards as the puerile comments of some critics.

Dr Norrie MacQueen, head of the University's Department of Politics, said, "We are absolutely delighted that Sir David is the final speaker in the "New Scotland: New Politics" lunchtime lecture series. Once again this programme has been a great success and we would like to thank our other speakers Patricia Ferguson MSP, Minister for Parliamentary Business, and Lord James Douglas-Hamilton MSP".
