Photo opportunity 10am, Thursday 28 November, Tower reception, Tower Building, University of Dundee
A rising star at the London criminal bar and one of three sisters to graduate from the University of Dundee will give budding lawyers in her alma mater an insight into life at the bar and advice on their law careers when she returns to her old faculty this week.
Anuja Dhir is a criminal barrister working in London. She took the unique opportunity - only offered at the University of Dundee to study both Scots and English law enabling her to practise law in both countries. Anuja is now involved with helping to recruit graduates for the Bar Council.
She will tell law students at her old University about her experience after graduating. Armed with qualifications to practise both Scots and English law she had none of the traditional connections to get into the bar but was determined to make it. Faced with lots of choices including which country to work in and which area of law to pursue, Anuja was given a training award from Gray's Inn chambers in London, started out in commercial law but moved to crime and extradition which she found more exciting and enjoyable.
Fiona Raitt, head of the law department at the University of Dundee says: "We are very much looking forward to Anuja's talk on Thursday. It is a great inspiration to the students to hear a successful lawyer who once sat in their seats in the lecture theatre. We are delighted to welcome Anuja back as a graduate and hear her insights on the everyday practice of law. This is only one of the initiatives we have in the law department to involve our graduates and ensure that their connection to the University of Dundee is maintained throughout their careers and beyond."
Adam Balfour, representative of second year law students: "Hopefully, this talk will provide inspiration and motivation for those of us wishing a successful career at the Bar, whether north or south of the border."
Anuja's father is Professor Ravindra Dhir, director of the concrete technology unit at the University of Dundee. His three daughters all studied at the University. Namrta and Pratima are now dentists in Birmingham.
