photo opportunity 11am Tuesday 13 November, Bentleys Shopfitting Ltd., Balgray Works, Balgray Place, Dundee.
Design students from the University of Dundee will visit Bentleys shopfitters today to learn about the design process at work in industry.
The visit is part of a project being devised by staff at Duncan of Jordanstone faculty of art and design to expose students to the demands of design work in commercial industry and allow them to think through design issues like the environment and sustainability while they are in the work place.
The group of 18 second year students will be engaged in all aspects of the company's marketing, setting out drawings and ordering materials prior to the manufacturing process. They will then be shown the company's quality assurance, delivery of the product and on site inspections. Students will then visit a completed project where the designer, client and company will review the product.
Glenn Stewart, teaching fellow at the University of Dundee said: "Companies who rely on designers do not normally network with students until after graduation, when employed, or set up in business. This initiative is to create a strong relationship between education and industry and give students first hand experience of commercial design while they are still studying."
The initiative sets out to encourage creative and manufacturing industries within Dundee and further afield to host students, allowing them to experience design in the work place as an integrated part of their design degree./ENDS
