The University of Dundee's programme of evening concerts continues on Thursday night with The Ruskin Ensemble.
With Jane Gomm on violin, Jonathan Prag on violin and Jo Easthope on cello the ensemble will be performing a varied programme of music. The concert opens with the colour and sparkle of Venice, Vivaldi's enchanting, but little known sonata for violin and cello followed by the Baroque splendour of 18th century Germany, J.S. Bach's beautiful violin sonata.
The set continues with the charm and elegance of 19th century Vienna with pieces by Beethoven and Schubert. Seductive and sophisticated rhythms from South America and Italy can be heard in Paganini's Terzetto. And finally the ensemble will perform a startling new piece from England by Gordon Carr in which telling snatches of great love poetry are ingeniously woven with music.
Named after the Victorian writer and critic John Ruskin, the ensemble have given concerts in music clubs, arts centres, castles and country houses throughout the British Isles. They are regular visitors to National Trust properties and have performed at the British Embassy in Paris and Number 11 Downing Street.
In 1998 they toured the Netherlands including several concerts in Amsterdam. The Ensemble are particularly committed to taking music into the community and have given concerts in over 50 small villages with workshops in local schools and performances in hospices and residential homes.
Thursday evening's concert will take place in the Chaplaincy centre at the University of Dundee at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6,£4 concession, £2 for students and are available from University music co-ordinator Graeme Stevenson 01382 348148./ENDS
