Fresh new start

photo opportunity 5.30pm, Thursday 8 November, Music Rooms, Airlie Place,Dundee.

It's a new, fresh, sophisticated look for the University of Dundee Music Society as they officially open their rehearsal room tonight after a summer's redecoration by some handy and committed students.

Patron of the music society Russell Reid will unveil the plaque and declare the rooms fit for rehearsal watched by Deputy Principal Bill Barr and accompanied by the popular University Big Band.

Student members of the orchestra, choir, chamber choir and big band spent their summer sanding and varnishing the rehearsal floor, stripping and papering the walls and ceiling and putting elegant touches to the lighting and finishings. Previously the Airlie Hall common room, the room is now a sophisticated rehearsal and performance space.

Russell Reid: " Having a lovely place to play music is a great thing. The refurbished room is a palace compared to some of the places of our famous composers worked in. The room is a tribute to the students in the music society who, by their own efforts, have made it so attractive, fresh and new. I hope it continues to be a haven for students of every discipline who are interested in singing and playing music - one of the best ways to bring people together."

The Dundee University Music Society was the beneficiary of a bequest by the late Mrs Christina Drysdale. Mrs Drysdale left the Music Society £500 which they have invested in the redecoration of their facilities.

The Music Society at the University of Dundee has grown considerably under the direction of Music Co-ordinator Graham Stevenson. The University now boasts a chamber choir, University choir, orchestra, big band, string ensemble, staff choir, Bach consort, organ scholarship and saxophone scholarship./ENDS
