Murray Agnew, a third year Town and Regional Planning student at the University of Dundee has been awarded The Jim Boyack Memorial Trust Ninth Annual Award of £400. His third prize in three years!

Murray (30), from Dundee, changed his career from merchant seaman to Town and Regional Planning student four years ago. Married with one daughter, and another baby on the way, Murray was delighted to win the award to help with his course fees.

"I have always been interested in how things are planned and why they are the way they are. This award will help me to support my family while I continue my studies to become a professional planner."

Barbara Illsley, lecturer within Town and Regional Planning, encouraged Murray to apply. "Murray is a very deserving winner of the Jim Boyack Memorial Award for 2001. He entered the University of Dundee as a mature student having successfully completed the Access to Town and Regional Planning course at Dundee College. He has demonstrated an interest and enthusiasm for his subject, gaining the Ove Arup Prize in first year and the David Kirk and Associates Town Planning Prize in second year."

The Trust gives awards to students who are in need of financial support to enable them to enter or continue a planning course.

The Town and Regional Planning course is based on an array of complex economic, social and environmental issues, which guide future development in the use of land, buildings and infrastructure and is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute.

The cheque will be presented at the Annual Conference of the Scottish Branch of the Royal Town Planning Institute in Scotland on 16 November 2001 in Hamilton./ENDS
