Over 50 guests will gather for the launch of the newly refurbished prayer rooms at the Dundee University Islamic Society (DUIS) on Wednesday 14 November after a six month £9,000 renovation project.
Attending the opening ceremony are Vice-Principal, Professor David Swinfen, President of DUIS, Dr Abdallah Shehab and Mr Ibrahim Okhai, President of Dundee Islamic Society.
Professor David Swinfen, who will be welcoming guests to the ceremony said: "There has been an Islamic Society at the University of Dundee for about 10 years. The University has taken steps over the years to bring a number of faiths together, including the Muslim faith."
With the recent renovations the rooms have now been transformed with new carpets, paint and newly installed windows and toilet facilities and kitchen.
Third year Electronic and Electrical Engineering student, Muhammed El-Awaisi, has been co-ordinating the refurbishments since June of this year.
"The students have given up a lot of their time over the summer to renovate the prayer rooms, library and audio library, which holds over 2000 audio and video tapes and a large selection of valuable Arabic and English books. The University of Dundee's Estates and Buildings have also been a great help funding, recarpeting and painting the prayer rooms."
With over 100 members in the DUIS, two prayer rooms accommodate an upstairs room for the women members and a downstairs for the male members. The downstairs prayer room holds a brand new ablutions area where members take part in a wash prior to their prayers.
Muhammed explains: "The new prayer rooms and library are open to all students, not just Muslims. Everyone is welcome to come along to the prayer rooms to learn more about Islam, join the library or even just to have a cup of tea and talk to members."
The first event to take place after the DUIS launch will be Ramadan (breaking the fast) which takes place on either November 16 or 17 depending on the phase of moon.
