Marking the end of the University of Dundee's Serious Business Plan Competition 2005, students
from the university will be awarded over £4000 worth of funding and prize money to take their
innovative business ideas a step further, at an award ceremony this evening at the Queen’s Hotel
(Thursday 19 May).
Now in its third year the competition encourages students to use their entrepreneurial skills to
come up with business plans in the hope of winning a placement in the University’s business
development unit - the Greenhouse.
This year Douglas More and his team have been awarded the top prize for their business plan to set
up a multimedia consultancy company that offers state of the art technology and personalised
services. The team, under the business name Aurora Studios, will be given office space, for 6
months, at the University's Greenhouse where they will receive support and development advice to
help take their plans to the next level and ultimately into business. The team will also be
awarded £600 prize money.
Since 2001 the University of Dundee's Centre for Enterprise Management (CEM) has been providing
the finance to support the Serious Business Plan Competition that helps encourage enterprise and
entrepreneurial skills within the student population. The University's Young Entrepreneurs Society
runs the competition and actively promotes the event to its members. Scottish Enterprise Tayside
and the Scottish Institute for Enterprise provide additional sponsorship for the competition.
As a measure of this initiative's success, the prize winners including Dynamo Computing Solution
(2002), Leyson Innovation and Design (2003) and Tee-Time Treasures (2004) have gone on to further
develop their business ideas in the University's incubator and pre-incubator facilities.
