Conferment of honorary degree upon Baroness Greenfield
PHOTOCALL - WEDNESDAY MAY 11, BONAR HALL, DUNDEE, 5pm.
The University of Dundee will confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) upon Baroness
Susan Greenfield, one of Britain's leading psychologists, at a ceremony in the Bonar Hall, Dundee,
on Wednesday May 11.
Baroness Greenfield is one of the UK's leading authorities on brain functions and disorders, and
is Professor of Pharmacology at Oxford.
Born in London, she was the first member of her family to go to university, studying experimental
psychology at St Hilda's College, Oxford.
She received her DPhil in 1977 and then undertook research at Oxford and at the College de France,
Paris, before being appointed a Junior Research Fellow at Green College, Oxford, in 1981.
In 1985 she was elected a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, and since 1996 she has been Professor
of Pharmacology at Oxford. Her research concentrates on understanding brain functions and
disorders, such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases, as well as the physical basis of
consciousness.
The Honorary Degree will be conferred by Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, Sir Alan
Langlands, and Professor Trevor Harley, of the Department of Psychology, will deliver the oration.
Following the Honorary Graduation ceremony, Baroness Greenfield will deliver the Drever Lecture in
the Tower Extension Lecture Theatre at the University. Her lecture is titled, "Chemicals and
Consciousness".
NOTES TO EDITORS:
The Drever Lecture in Psychology is an occasional event to honour outstanding psychologists and to
promote understanding of psychology in the wider community. The lectures commemorate James Drever,
1910-1991, first Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee.
From 1944 to 1966, and like his father before him, James Drever was Professor of Psychology at the
University of Edinburgh. He left Edinburgh in 1966 to become Master of Queen’s College, Dundee. He
was Principal of Dundee from 1967 to 1978.
The Drever Lectures are possible because of the extraordinary generosity of the Drever family and
the Board of Trustees of the Drever Fund.
