Launch of Discovery Days 2005 book
World class research across topics as diverse as the treatment of diabetes and the economic
crises of the 1970s is contained in a new book launched by the University of Dundee, "The Discovery
Days 2005".
In January of this year the University put nineteen of its leading new thinkers before the public
for Discovery Days 2005, in which each of the new professors is given just fifteen minutes to
present some of their latest findings.
This was the second year in which the University had staged the event, and it again proved to be a
runaway success, with the two days of presentations being filled with exciting and adventurous
thoughts and ideas across a whole spectrum from life sciences to accountancy.
University Chancellor and Nobel Prize winner Sir James Black summed up the event by saying it was,
"A highly stimulating and intellectually exciting couple of days...electrifying".
A session could start with Bob Harris talking about gaming and gambling in the 18th century and end
with George Macfarlane explaining the very latest research on bacteria which cause ulcerative
colitis.
All of these talks are now presented within The Discovery Days 2005 book, which also includes a
CD-ROM of the Discovery Days Showreel, which celebrates the communication of research through the
arts in a series of stunning images.
The book will be launched this Saturday, May 7, in the Tower Extension of the University, before
the Saturday Evening Lecture given by Lord Puttnam. The Discovery Days Showreel will be running in
the Tower foyer.
The book will be on sale at £3, proceeds from which go to the University's Annual Fund.
The Discovery Days 2006 will take place on January 12 and 13 next year.
