Dundee Cancer Forum 2005

Senior clinicians and researchers working in cancer research at the University of Dundee will gather at the city’s Apex Hotel on Thursday May 12 for the 2005 meeting of the local Cancer Forum.

Some of the latest issues affecting research and clinical treatment of the disease will be discussed at the meeting with a programme of talks from many of the senior figures working in the city, which is firmly established as one of the world's leading hubs of cancer research. Around 50 local clinicians and researchers are expected to attend.

The issues discussed will range from lifestyle issues in cancer prevention through screening to detailed genetic science. Among those speaking will be Professor Alastair Munro, Prof Annie Anderson, Prof John Hayes, Prof Tom Fahey, Prof Frank Carey, Professor Roland Wolf, Dr Inke Nathke, Prof Phil Quirke and Prof Bob Steele.

"This cancer forum demonstrates some of the developing links between basic science and clinical care for which Dundee is now achieving world class recognition," said Alastair Thompson, Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Dundee.

The Cancer Forum is organised by the Dundee Cancer Research UK Co-operative Centre, which aims to maximise the benefits of having a local concentration of related cancer research groups. Dundee currently hosts 17 research teams funded by Cancer Research UK.

Professor Jim Cassidy, Cancer Research UK Chair of Medical Oncology in Glasgow said, "Cancer Research UK has a significant funding input to Dundee and other Scottish centres and are delighted to hear of progress being made in the management of a common cancer."

The Cancer Forum aims to bring clinical issues and basic research together for the benefit of all interested in cancer, and to generate discussion and collaboration. These meetings are open to all scientists and clinicians who are interested in any aspect of cancer.

The meeting of the Forum will be followed later in the day by a meeting of the Scottish chapter of the Association of Coloproctology, also at the Apex Hotel.
