Photo opportunity: 5.55pm, Saturday 22 May, University of Dundee, Tower Extension Lecture Theatre, Tower
Building, Dundee
The University of Dundee's popular Discovery Days inaugural lectures published in a single volume will be
launched this Saturday. University Principal Sir Alan Langlands will officially launch the book 'Discovering
the Future, The Inaugural Volume of the Discovery Days Lectures' at 6:00pm in the Tower Extension Lecture
Theatre.
The Discovery Days, held in January this year were a hit with the public. They brought together into the
spotlight the work of 37 professors researching at the cutting edge of a wide range of topics from obesity
and economics to infant care and blood pressure.
Among them were Professor Mark Chaplain who discussed mathematical modelling as a tool for cracking cancer
and Professor Pamela Ferguson who outlined her work on drafting a first criminal code for Scotland.
In his foreword to the volume University Chancellor and Nobel Prize winner Sir James Black, refers to the
"delight and excitement of the juxtaposition" of so many different topics. He writes, "The wide range of
subjects and styles of presentation was mentally refreshing. In a sense, the breadth and depth of the
presentations defined the enormous vitality of the University of Dundee as an academic power house."
The book presents summaries of each of the 37 Discovery Day presentations, illustrated in full colour.
The launch coincides with the final lecture in the University's Saturday Evening lecture series to be
presented by Professor Cheryll Tickle on Embryos, Genes and Evolution. The public are also invited to the
lecture that immediately follows the book launch at 6.00pm.
"Discovering the Future" can be purchased on Saturday at a special price of £3.00 with proceeds going to the
University’s student hardship fund.
