Aprons fit for the catwalk
With heavy endorsement from celebrity chefs, the kitchen is a fashionable place to be. Now, Fiona
McConnell, a final year art student at University of Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and
Design has come up with another reason to get into the kitchen. Fiona has given the humble apron a
twenty-first century makeover and her creations could encourage even a culinary novice to head straight for
the stove.
Inspired by her family's history as bakers and a personal love of the kitchen and its importance in family
life, Fiona transformed the apron from something easily hidden away behind a kitchen cupboard into a
fashionable piece of clothing that would not look out of place on the catwalk.
Imposed with digitally printed designs, the twenty-one year old's creations are layered with nylon netting
that throw up images of a Tchaikovsky ballet. She will display her aprons at the 2004 Dundee Degree Show,
opening on Saturday 22 May at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.
Fiona is one of over two-hundred final year students displaying their work at the 2004 Dundee Degree Show.
The show will include students' work from the departments of Fine Art, Television and Imaging (TVi), Design
and Architecture. It is free and open to the public from Saturday 22 May until 29 May.
