Graduation & Summer Sensation

Plans are afoot to host the biggest graduation party Dundee has ever seen for the University of Dundee's two thousand graduates this summer.

Dubbed "Graduation Sensation", for three days in July, the public area outside the Sensation Science centre will be transformed by marquees and a fairground providing an all weather tented village for garden parties after each ceremony, and "Summer Sensation" - a end of year party for University staff and alumni.

Principal Sir Alan Langlands said: "Our aim this year is to do something a little different. We have taken the many positive aspects of our graduation ceremonies, which are rich in history and tradition, and created a balance of fun and celebration for our graduates and their families."

David Cunningham from the Principal's Office explains: "The University plans to host a send off to remember for its graduates. All festivities for graduation will take place in the tented village from the garden parties with champagne and music accompaniment to the University's Greatest Mind lecture. There will be something for everyone from students who know the University inside out to campus tours for families visiting the University and the City for the first time.

The tented village will provide an all weather venue so even if the rain persists, the parties will be in full swing inside."

Final arrangements will be revealed nearer the summer but it is likely that the village will comprise three themed marquees hosting live music during the garden parties, a bar, dance floors, stages and a disco.

The University is inviting its alumni to join in the festivities at Summer Sensation on the Friday night with a possible guest appearance from honorary graduate Bob Geldof who will be conferred with his honorary degree on Friday afternoon in the Caird Hall.

On Saturday 13 July the annual Discovery lecture will be delivered by artist, graduate and honorary graduate David Mach, followed by the annual general meeting of the University's Graduates' Council in the Bonar Hall.

The University is offering a four day package for families in conjunction Dundee City Council, the Sensation Science centre and the Dundee Heritage Trust. Apart from the graduation celebrations, a series of complementary events including an open air concert, a Greatest Mind lecture and crèches facilities will be available.

Paul Jennings Chief Executive of Sensation Science Centre: "We are very pleased to have been selected as the preferred venue for this years Graduation Sensation. Sensation science centre has strong links with the University and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to work in a partnership that celebrates the achievements of students while promoting the City to visiting friends and family. We hope to continue to be the host venue for the University's graduation celebrations in future years".
