An array of bicycles will converge on Discovery Point in Dundee tomorrow to launch the city's annual Cyclathon organised by the Claverhouse rotary club.
Ian Sturrock, President of the Claverhouse rotary club will be joined by Councillor Charles Farquhar Depute Lord Provost, Tim Brett, Past President of the Rotary Club and Bryn Williams of Nicholsons Dundee with a tandem delivery bike, a unicycle and tricycle.
The Dundee Cyclathon 2002 will take place on Sunday 9 June round the 26 mile Dundee green circular route starting and finishing at Caird Park Stadium. Every five miles there will be a rest halt for picnics and water with first aid and cycle repair facilities. The route will also be marshalled at main road crossings in the interests of safety.
The Rotary club has organised the cyclathon as a fun event to give people the opportunity to raise money through sponsorship for their favourite charities. Members want to encourage individuals, families and teams from work or school to take part in the cyclathon for fun or for a charity of their choice.
Ian Sturrock, president of the Claverhouse Rotary Club said: "The cyclathon is not designed to be a race. People can start anytime between 10am and 12 noon and still have plenty of time to finish by 4,30pm. We would like as many people as possible - from keen cyclists to those who have to fish their old bikes from the garage to take part -it should be a relaxing fun day for all the family.
Last year the cyclists raised £15,000 for local charities. We hope that we can support our local causes to the same tune this year."
The Dundee Cyclathon 2002 is sponsored by the University of Dundee, Thorntons WS solicitors, Dundee City Council and the Courier.
