Graduates face more competition than ever before especially if they are hoping to pursue a career in one of the UK's creative industries. However, local talent from Dundee University could soon find themselves ahead of their peers following the launch of a graduate roadshow ran by the brand communications company ATTIK and sponsored by First Direct later this week.
ATTIK co-founder and CEO James Sommerville began the now global branding company with Simon Needham sixteen years ago from his gran's attic. He knows first hand the difficulties graduates face and hopes the roadshow will give students the chance to hear some practical advice before they enter the commercial world.
The best in Dundee's creative talent will also be encouraged to apply for a place on the world's first creative imaging Masters Degree programme that is being launched by ATTIK with Huddersfield University. The MA will give students, for the first time, the opportunity to work on high profile global clients such as Nike whilst studying for an accredited degree.
He said:
"Competition for graduates is more intense than ever before so by getting into key design schools like Jordanstone College of Art and Design we can help Universities make sure the students get the practical commercial advice they need to make the next few months a success.
"I would also urge the best of the University's creative talent to look at the MA we are launching with Huddersfield University. For the first time this programme will give students the chance to work on real life high profile client accounts whilst studying for an accredited degree. Although with only 15 places available world-wide competition will be tight."
first direct is also involved with the Masters and will give students on the course the chance to work with their 'in-house' team and get real commercial 'client side' experience.
David Herbert, Course Director in Graphic Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, thinks the roadshow will really help inspire creative students at what is a crucial time coming up to graduation. He said:
"This is an excellent initiative by Attik to address important issues concerning the interface between education and the creative industries. "The timing of the event is also appropriate as final year students are on the threshold of seeking employment in the commercial world.
"The collaborative partnership between the University of Huddersfield and Attik to introduce a Masters Degree in Creative Imaging is very exciting and I am sure that staff and students who attend the presentation will be interested to hear about this new venture.
"Attik's visit also provides an ideal opportunity for all of our students, from first year through to final year, to see at first hand the highly acclaimed work of a leading international design company."
The roadshow will also give students a chance to discuss ATTIK's latest creative offering NOISE.FOUR which has gained global recognition since it's launch last year. Students can also win original proofs of NOISE.FOUR during the roadshow.
Anyone wishing to attend should contact David Herbert, Course Director in Graphic Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee.
