Carlo Morelli of the Economics department at the University of Dundee Will address a conference at Glasgow Caledonian University on Saturday 12 May On food security and the the global meat market. The conference is Organised by Globalise Resistance to discuss the effects of global food markets on development and poverty.
Carlo Morelli: "The impact of foot & mouth disease, following on from The BSE crisis, in Britain has led to a questioning of the structure of the meat industry and methods of production used. The links between government subsidies in the developed world, the dominance of large firms within the industry and the threat to food security need to be examined.
The conference has been organised in response to the Efficient Consumer Response conference in Glasgow next week which sees some of the largest food firms in the world discussing strategy for the global markets. Other speakers on 12 May include Robin Harper MSP, Scott Armstrong from the Scottish Genetix Action and Rosie Kane, environmental spokesperson for The Scottish Socialist Party.ENDS
