New law publisher for Scotland
Scotland is to have a new publisher of law. Dundee University Press (DUP) Ltd launches its new
law publishing division at a Holyrood event on 26 April.
The division comes under the direction of Dr Carole Dalgleish, a law graduate of both Aberdeen and
Cambridge Universities. Carole has 20 years' experience of the Scottish legal market and ten years'
experience in Scottish law publishing. She will be known to many authors through her previous
commissioning roles with W Green, T & T Clark and LexisNexis UK.
A letter announcing the new move was distributed today (29 March) to members of Scotland's legal
community including academics at all Scotland's law schools.
Dr Carole Dalgleish: "Our objective is to become the publisher of choice for the academic and
professional lawyer and we now invite proposals for new books.
Authors can be sure that through DUP they will receive a first class service. Our editors are
qualified in Scots law, production will be to the highest standards, royalties will be paid on time
and authors will be encouraged to be involved at every stage of the process."
Sales and marketing will be through Compass Academic Book Sales and distribution through Book
Source.
The launch comes at a particularly apposite time for Scots law academics seeking publication before
the December 2007 deadline for the next research assessment exercise.
Chair of DUP's board of directors Dr David Duncan said: "This is excellent news for all of
Scotland's legal community - professionals, academics, staff and students. We are delighted to have
someone with Carole’s wide experience and reputation to take this new DUP venture forward and
energise Scots law publishing."
Dundee University Press was established in 2004 as a joint venture between the University of Dundee
and Edinburgh-based publishers Birlinn Ltd to develop academic publishing in Scotland. DUP is
accepting book proposals in the areas of energy and the professions, history, architecture, science
and the public understanding of science.
The launch will be announced at a wider event at Holyrood on 26 April to celebrate DUP's first
title, The Architecture of Scottish Government: From Kingship to Parliamentary Democracy, jointly
with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.
