6 March 2003
Photo opportunity 5.30pm, Friday March 07, Lamb Gallery, Tower Building, University of Dundee.
An exhibition of both past and present photographs of South Georgia, a remote island in the South Atlantic, opens tomorrow at the University of Dundee.
The historic dimension is captured in the glass plates of Frank Hurley, who was the photographer on Sir Ernest Shackelton's ill-fated exhibition to the Antarctic in 1914. The plates have kindly been made available by Peter Wordie, whose scientist father James also accompanied Shackleton on the Endurance.
Peter Wordie and His Excellency Donald Lamont, commissioner of South Georgia and last governor of the Falkland Islands, will be present at the opening tomorrow evening.
Contemporary images are represented by the current work of Elaine Shemilt and Stephen Ellis from the research group 'Project Atlantis', based at University of Dundee.
To coincide with the exhibition, a public lecture on South Georgia will take place at the University on March 10.
'Legacy : Images of South Georgia' runs until April 14.
