Three charitable trusts have come to the rescue of Scotland's hearts pledging generous donations of cash totalling nearly £400,000 towards the Institute for Cardiovascular Research (TICR) at the University of Dundee.
The Gannochy Trust has given £300,000, The Alexander Moncur Trust - £35,000 and The Mathew Trust - £50,000 to the first heart institute of its kind in Scotland.
Chairman of the TICR fundraising committee Robert McLaren said: "We are very grateful to the Trusts for their generous donations. Heart disease is Scotland's biggest killer. We will ensure that this money is spent funding research to tackle heart disease in Scotland."
TICR will bring together on one site, skilful clinicians and researchers from all areas of the University of Dundee's Medical School who have a special interest in the prevention and treatment of heart disease. Lorraine Kelly recently opened the first phase of the Institute - clinical research rooms which will allow interaction between research staff and patients. TICR is the first institute of its kind in Scotland bringing together experts from different fields to tackle heart disease.
