Two students of the University of Dundee have been short-listed for awards at this year's prestigious Scottish Students on Screen event.
Short works by Gregor Dewar and Sharon Campbell of the School of Television and Imaging will be screened before, and judged by, leading faces from the screen industry at Dundee Contemporary Arts on March 14 and 15.
Gregor has been shortlisted for Best Fiction category, the Metro Audience Award and the Digital Animations Group Award for Special Achievement for his work entitled "Electric Sheep". His piece illustrates the duplication of a toy mammal, looking at how the pursuit for a perfect animal has a detrimental effect on the original.
Gregor is a graduate of BA (Hons) Time Based Art. He graduated in June 2001 with a 2.1 degree and is now studying on the MSc in Electronic Imaging masters course.
Sharon Campbell is a graduate of the BDes (Hons) Animation and Electronic Media course. Sharon also graduated last year with a 2.1 degree and is continuing her studies in Animation on the Master of Design Course. She has animated her interpretation of the duet from act three of Verdi's opera, La Traviata. "Parigi O Cara" is in the Best Animation and Metro Audience Award slots.
The School of Television and Imaging, based at the University's Duncan of Jordanstone Faculty of Art and Design, has already tasted success at the annual awards. Last year "The Tokugawa Era" by Animation undergraduate Mark Holmes won the Best Animation category while MSc student Catriona Grant, won best in the Open category with "The Image Of His Father".
Head of the School of Television and Imaging, Steve Flack, said he was delighted that University of Dundee students have again made it on to the shortlist for the awards.
"The awards are one of the finest showcases for new work and just making it onto the shortlist is a great for individual students as well demonstrating the quality of teaching at the School of Television and Imaging. The event is in its third year and already it is held in high regard, while links with industry are becoming closer every year.
"Both Gregor and Sharon have used experimental techniques in their work and it is very encouraging to see that these have been enthusiastically accepted."
The University of Dundee is maintaining a strong presence at the DCA cinema this week. Law graduate Mikail Chowdhury's first feature-length film "The Party" is being shown in Cinema 1 on Thursday evening to coincide with the Scottish Students on Screen event.
Mikail's film was inspired by his time as a student at the University of Dundee and is an adaptation of a his original play of the same name which was warmly received at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2001.
The film centres on a group of university students on the brink of graduation and was shot in Dundee on a budget of just £900.
The Party will be screened in DCA's Cinema 1 at 6.00pm on Thursday March 14. Gregor and Sharon's films will be screened throughout the day on Friday March 14 and 15. Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony on Friday March 15 between 6.30 and 7.30pm.
