High flying advisors

The Applied Computing Department at the University of Dundee will today welcome the newest member of its Industrial Advisory Board to the department for a visit.

Clive Palmer of Scottish Enterprise Tayside joins Sean Gordon, Senior Consultant in Microsoft Consulting Services as the latest member of the board. Both men will add to the expertise on the board which advises the department on skills that industry expects so that lectures can pass on these expectations to students. The advisory board ensures that courses in the department contain enough industrial relevance preparing graduates for the workplace and jobs in industry.

Clive Palmer is Acting Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Tayside. He said: "I am delighted to be joining the Industrial Advisory Board. Skills is arguably the single most important issue for many companies and we need to encourage students to develop the abilities they need to pursue successful careers in the workplace.

"We are heavily involved in supporting the digital media sector in Tayside and there is a great deal of research carried out by students in the Applied Computing Department in areas such as design, human-computer interfaces and usability engineering that is of great interest to these companies.

"It is vital that we increase the flow of talented individuals coming through our universities to supply the leading Tayside digital media companies of tomorrow. I look forward to working with my fellow Board members toward achieving that aim"

The Industrial Advisory Board is chaired by Alison Armstrong, former Vice President of NCR and meets three times a year to advise the department. Other companies represented on the board are BT, Visual Sciences, SUN Technologies and Oakleigh Consulting.
