A group of crooners from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee has just cut a CD of easy listening all time classic tracks.

Ron and the Researchers are led by Ron Lorimer, a store technician who works in the School of Life Sciences. Ron is infamous in the Wellcome Trust Building for his singing and was presented with money from the staff on his 60th birthday to make a CD of his favourite tunes that he sings while working.

Ron said; "I didn't want to make a CD on my own so I joined up with some musically minded scientists here at the University to do the recording."

Professor Jeff Williams, group leader in the Wellcome Trust Building: "Ron is a real institution in the place and he brightens everyone's day. You can always tell when Ron's around because you can hear him singing before you see him. He sings everything from ballads to opera classics and rock and it was great fun to help back him on the CD."

Bass guitarist Alex Schuttlekopf is currently studying for his PhD in the School of Life Sciences. Dr Magnus Alphey is a member of the crystallography group in the School of Life Sciences and plays the keyboard in the group. Magnus said: "I was reluctant at first but joined in when I realised how much fun it would be. We've had a lot of laughs with Ron and the Researchers."

The group recorded their CD with the help of record producer Mike Brown at Dundee's Seagate studios. Mike said: "Ron and the guys were great. Their choice of songs is brilliant. I think it's excellent that they've got together in their own time to produce a CD for such a good cause - Maggie's cancer centre."

Ron and the Researchers' CD goes on sale on Monday 1 April in the Wellcome Trust Building. All proceeds will go to Maggie's cancer centre at Ninewells./ENDS
