A series of International Symposia on recycling begins next week (Monday 19 -20 March) at the University of Dundee where over 200 experts from as far as Kazakhstan, USA, Japan and New Zealand will be attending various discussions on eliminating wastes and enhancing the environment.

Mr Sam Galbraith, Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning will perform the opening ceremony. Other principal guests include Professor Stan Dagg, OBE, Chairman of SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) West Region Board and University Principal Sir Alan Langlands.

The two-day Symposia, are organised by the director of the University's internationally reputed Concrete Technology Unit, Professor Ravindra Dhir. The delegates, who come from industry and research, will hear papers on four themes:

Said Prof Dhir: "Recycling is not a straightforward issue and the only sustainable way forward is to use science and technology to identify economical and environmentally sensible routes for all waste materials. The Concrete Technology Unit acts as a focal point for scientists, engineers and technologies to work together and develop such sustainable solutions for the benefit of all."

The Unit, which won a £330,000 project from the Department of Trade and Industry, is working with 15 industrial organisations in developing alternative, high added value recycling routes for used glass bottles with the concrete construction industry. A similar approach is being adopted in working with used rubber in producing a new range of special concrete products.

The Government is also promoting recycling very hard. In Scotland, the Executive has a national waste strategy and is making £50m available to local authorities to help implement their waste plans./ends
