University Campus Development Revealed

An exhibition showing the exciting new architectural plans for the next stage of developments intended for the University of Dundee campus will open this Saturday (11 June). The exhibition provides an explanation of the developments currently taking place and a fascinating insight into the plans for the future.

Sir Terry Farrell, one of the UK’s leading architects and masterplanners, who designed the new Home Office headquarters in London and the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, has drawn up the plans.

The campus building programme is already gaining pace with key buildings such as the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and the Queen Mother Building due for completion over the summer, and work has begun on new residences and a new faculty and teaching building. The University is currently involved in a £200m campus redevelopment campaign that will dramatically change the landscape of the campus and the city itself.

Sir Terry is keen to ensure that the redeveloped campus matches the needs and aspirations of its community, he explains, "With major buildings now well advanced, we are looking closely at maximising the ambience between them and with the rest of the city. We have given detailed examination to the character of the heart of the campus - the planned campus green. With changes in the city surrounding the campus - Seabraes Yard, car parks, and riverside developments - there is also an emphasis on new routes linking to the surrounding city."

Also involved is sculptor and artist David Mach, recently named visiting Professor of Inspiration and Discovery, who is developing ideas for a public work of art which could be incorporated into the campus plan.

University of Dundee Principal, Sir Alan Langlands, said, "The plans developed by Farrell and Partners have captured the imagination of the University community. We look forward to making them a reality as our £200m capital redevelopment programme is taken forward."

The exhibition, entitled "Campus in the City 2", is free and takes place in the Lamb Gallery on the 1st Floor of the Tower Building from 11 June until 11 August 2005. Opening hours: Mon-Fri: 9.30am-8pm, Sat: 9.30am-4.30pm
