The Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Dundee and the High School of Dundee will
cement an important partnership agreement this week that will give the University research opportunities
and student placements and enhance the high quality professional training available to High School staff.
The University of Dundee will provide continuing professional development training for the teaching staff
at the High School, as part of the school’s ongoing programme to attain the highest standards in teaching
methods and delivery. The High School is building on its strong record of staff development and will
concentrate on enhancing all aspects of learning and teaching through the programme.
The professional training programme will be delivered on site at the High School, and additional elements
of the professional training programme will be delivered at the University of Dundee.
Professor Ron Elder, Deputy Principal and Dean of Education and Social Work at the University of Dundee
welcomes the opportunity for educationalists at the University to study the 10-14 transition period from
primary to secondary education in a school which provides both on one site. Professor Elder explains:
"The 10-14 stage is an area of considerable interest at the moment where the link between continuity of
experience and attainment requires to be examined. We want to look at how children adapt to the
difference between primary and secondary teaching styles and how this transition can develop to make it
a seamless progression."
Rector of the High School, Mr Mike Duncan, said: "The High School and the University are two important
educational institutions in the city, due in great part to our commitment to excellence in learning and
teaching. Such excellence would be unattainable without the skills and dedication of our staff, and I am
delighted that we can support their efforts by introducing this additional opportunity for professional
development. The two institutions already work closely together on the advanced entry initiative for
senior pupils, and it is fitting that this latest project will bring benefits for us both, across the
fields of student training, research and staff development."
