Fulbright scholar set for University of Dundee
University of Dundee's Institute for Transatlantic, European and American Studies (ITEAS) has made a
short-term appointment of Fulbright scholar, Dr Charles Gannon. One of only six Fulbright senior
specialists appointed in the UK, Dr Gannon, Associate Professor of English at St. Bonaventure University,
New York State is a Senior Specialist in American Literature and Culture.
Dr Gannon will help develop a module on the postgraduate course in Transatlantic Studies that could
ultimately lead to a virtual classroom running between Dundee and St. Bonaventure University in the USA.
The Fulbright Programme, the U.S. government's flagship academic exchange programme is one of the most
prestigious awards programmes worldwide. Operating in 144 countries, more Fulbright scholars have won
Nobel Prizes than those of any other academic programme.
With numerous works of fiction and poetry published and an early career as a scriptwriter and producer in
New York, his credits included programmes for the United Nations and the World Health Organisation. Both
students and academics will value his wealth of experience.
University Principal Sir Alan Langlands said, "This is an important appointment for the Institute for
Transatlantic, European and American Studies and highlights the University's reputation for attracting
leading international academics. Students will benefit greatly from Dr Gannon’s wealth of experience and
position at the forefront of his field."
International academics will have the opportunity to meet the Fulbright scholar at the 2004 Transatlantic
Studies Association conference where Dr Gannon is one of the main contributors. The conference takes
place from July 12 - 15 in Dundee.
